Day 8: Savannah to Lexington, TN 45 miles; total miles 448 Wednesday, April 27, 2016

The forecast was for heavy showers in spots for mid-afternoon, so we left earlier than usual, arriving in Lexington by 1 pm. A hard rain with lightning and thunder started at 3:30 pm.

We have spotted a number of interesting, signed, road names: Peckerwood Road, Jot It Down Road, Poorhouse Road. I guess we should stop to take some photos.

White Breakfast in Savannah. Our hotel did not offer breakfast, so we stopped at a nearby southern chain restaurant. This was the special. I requested limited or no gravy; The waitress said the cook misunderstood her and heard: Extra gravy. Removing the gravy at that point seemed pointless to the cook.

We immediately crossed the Tennessee River riding west.
Savannah is on the left bank.

John just across the Tennessee River.

Flea market Central. At the crest of a long hill on the west side of the Tennessee River was the site of a multi-acre flea market. While closed, it offered thousands of feet of vendor space.

John in Tennessee.
Always tempting but often not nearby when we were ready to eat.

Critter of the day. Terry's Boxer, guarding his truck.

Terry—Why we bike tour. The most interesting stops usually involve extended conversations with a local resident. Terry was taking a break from mowing (the most visible occupation in the South). Mowing invariably involved a riding mower and overweight driver with a sense of humor. Terry was a retired master electrician, retired military (11 years), once worked for Loretta Lynn at her ranch in East Tennessee, and was diabetic. He assured us he ate only healthy foods, was ordering the fried chicken (takes 9 minutes, 45 seconds to deep fry), and emphasized that he removes all the breading. I'm a hillbilly, Terry emphasized.
